SONGWRITING

A semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition at just 14 years old, it was evident early on that Julia was one heck of a songwriter.

“Songwriting is my means of expression. It has always been more natural for me to construct lyrics to a melody rather than confront an issue through a conversation. It’s the only time someone will listen intently for a few minutes.”

Her poignant lyrical style evokes a sense of vulnerability in her listeners, making her a captivating storyteller.

“Honesty is the best policy when it comes to writing. People who connect with my songs tend to do so because they are looking to be honest with themselves. It’s an open line of communication.”

Hatfield has honed her craft for over a decade, no small feat for an artist at just 26 years old.

She has made a name for herself amongst writing communities across the country, spanning from the West Coast to Music City, already attending two writer’s retreats in the first half of 2023.

“Co-writing has been an essential part of my artistic development. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with brilliant writers who have helped me grow both as a person and as an artist.”

The personal investment in her craft becomes evident as she draws from her own experiences to relate with her listeners.

“A notable teacher of mine has always told me that we are a product of our own experiences. If you couple that ideology with an ability to be transparent, I believe you have what you need to connect with everyone.”

With an ethereal voice with which to deliver her messages, it’s easy to find yourself in Julia’s music.

“That’s the purpose in writing - to be understood. It’s simple really, when you break it down. I write because I want to share what’s on my heart and give others that voice to identify with. I’m just thankful I also happen to be obsessed with it.”
